M Is For Marvelous!

I’ve been a Leica fan from afar for years, but this week I officially doubled the Leica family here with my new Leica M11-P and the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Classic lens. To say I’m very thrilled would be an extreme understatement—this camera and lens combination has already reignited my excitement for photography in ways I didn’t expect. It is a great companion for the Leica Q3 and its unique abilities.

First Impressions of the Leica M11-P

The M11-P is a beautifully understated camera. Its minimalist design feels timeless, and the lack of a red dot makes it perfect for discreet shooting. At just the right balance of weight and size, it’s surprisingly comfortable to carry all day. I immediately appreciated the textured grip and the reassuring solid build—Leica truly puts craftsmanship first.

Inside, the 60-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor delivers incredible detail and dynamic range. The ability to capture both DNG and JPEG files with such clarity gives me confidence whether I’m shooting street, travel, or portraits. I also love the internal memory—it removes the anxiety of forgetting an SD card, and the new Maestro III processor makes reviewing shots lightning fast.

The Magic of the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Classic

Pairing the M11-P with the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Classic has been pure joy. This lens is all about character. Wide open, it renders dreamy bokeh with that signature Leica glow, and the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus areas is beautifully smooth. The subtle vignetting and gentle fall-off give images a film-like depth that feels both nostalgic and artistic.

Stopping down sharpens the image significantly, making it a versatile lens for travel or everyday photography. Its compact size also balances perfectly on the M11-P, turning the whole setup into a discreet, walkable creative kit.

What I’m Loving So Far

  • Color and Detail: The combination of the M11-P sensor and Summilux glass produces colors that are rich and lifelike, with exquisite micro-contrast.
  • Low-Light Confidence: Shooting handheld at f/1.4 lets me work in dimly lit cafes or evening streets without losing clarity.
  • Shooting Experience: Manual focusing with the rangefinder is meditative. It slows me down just enough to appreciate every frame.

After just one week, I can already see why so many photographers consider this pairing a dream setup. The Leica M11-P and Summilux 50mm f/1.4 Classic aren’t just tools—they’re an invitation to really see the world and capture it with intention.
