The hippie (or hippy) subculture was originally a youth oriented movement that arose in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread to other countries around the world.

The term “hippie” came from the word “hipster”, and was initially used to describe the beatniks who had moved into New York City’s Greenwich Village and San Francisco’s  infamous Haight-Ashbury district.
