The home chemistry set, a gift for many birthdays and Christmases, was very popular during the 1940s and 1950s. But, the chemistry set fell out of favor after the 1960s, which is odd since the 1960s was largely fueled by chemistry and its various byproducts. It’s just as well though, imagine the youth of today with a chemistry kit at their disposal.

The best selling chemistry sets were made by The A.C. Gilbert Company, the Porter Chemical Company and the Skilcraft Corporation. The composition of the kits became less complex as their popularity faded and as people became concerned about terrorism, illicit drug production and manufacturer liability.
