The most wonderful time of the year is also the time for what is arguably the most awful food of the year – the fruit cake. Tonight Show host Johnny Carson famously said that there really is only one fruitcake in the world, passed from family to family.
It is important to note that when a fruit cake contains a good deal of alcohol, it can remain edible for many years. In 2003, Jay Leno sampled a piece of fruit cake from 1873 on the Tonight Show. It must have contained pints and pints of alcohol and probably still exists today.
