Awful Food: Banana Candles

A banana candle salad is a fruit salad that was popular in America from the 1920s until the 1960s. Banana candles are usually made of pineapple, banana, cherry and lettuce. Either whipped cream or cottage cheese may be used to complete the dish.

Banana candle salads were used as an easy way to get kids to eat fruit because of its very unusual appearance. Banana candles were also seen as a good way to introduce children to cooking because they are so easy to make and so much fun to eat.
