Gas Light Company

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation where one person tries to make another person doubt their own perceptions, memories, or understanding of reality. This behavior can occur in various types of relationships, including personal, professional, or social contexts.

The term originates from a play called “Gas Light,” where a husband manipulates small elements in the environment, such as dimming gas lights, to make his wife question her sanity. Gaslighting often involves denial, lying, or exaggerating facts, and can lead to the victim feeling confused, anxious, or dependent on the manipulator for a sense of reality.
